|Opening in Nov. 2006, this local, somewhat upscale grocery store replaced the Diamond Market that burned down in 1998 (but only after much political and legal wrangling). The coffee bar at the register is open every day from 7am, even if the main store opens at 9am. They have several metal outdoor tables in front for seating. At the register, they use a two-group La Spaziale S3 Selectron to produce an espresso shot of a perfectly short size. It has a modestly sized even, medium brown layer of crema with a good thickness/consistency. The shot size creates a balanced, flavorful cup of thyme and some deeper herbal pungency. Some of the better stuff you can get in a paper cup. They are also good at milk foaming, particularly because of self-imposed quality controls: the baristas here aren't afraid to toss out a drink and start over. However, there have been inconsistencies, reflected in the correction score. In the mornings, they often pre-grind their beans en masse. The resulting shot can vary in flavor freshness as a result, and their milk frothing can run a bit too dry.
