|Dingy cafe with cracked glass and a handful of edibles. This is homey, authentic Mission St., though. The owners are friendly, even chummy, and just this shy of a drug possession conviction (as users, not dealers). Sure, Romy and Freddy may call you a family member and remember you here, but we wish their coffee skills matched their customer service. There's table seating looking out the front windows along 24th St., a few beat-up tables along a wall of photographs, and a rear exit door along Osage St. next to BART. The clientele is a mix of Latino locals and Mission dot-com slackers. Using an old school, two-group, Mr. Espresso-distributed Faema machine, they produce shots with a rather rich-looking, textured brown crema. This is way beyond the drip coffee extractions they served here when we first reviewed this place. But the shots are served large and watery in a large paper cup. Despite the increased volume of the pour, however, there's a slight sweetness in the cup at the bottom that wasn't there before. Hours vary, but they open typically by 4-5am everyday.
