|An odd, somewhat confused neighborhood caf with espresso, pastries, smoothies, Internet, DVDs, and mobile phones. Built-in community IT shop with free, digital-divide-bridging Internet access with purchase. Sponge-painted walls. Several indoor tables with window counter seating to surf the Web while watching the N Judah. Three colorful outdoor tables. Espresso is served with a thick, tiger-striped crema that has the darkest brown color I've encountered - and with white dots that give away the intense heat of the pour. The large La San Marco machine is almost too hot and takes a little too long to pour, but it doesn't hurt the espresso too much. Surprisingly rich, with a dark color, decent body, and an herbal flavor with some ashy (but not burnt) elements. Even some sweet caramel tones at the bottom of the cup. Be extra clear about a single, otherwise they assume a double shot ($1.50).
