|Chain coffee house (and everything else) on a grungy corner near the Financial District. (The "we open 7 days a week" on their business cards reflects its Chinatown proximity.) Vietnamese sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee. Some indoor counter seating and a few metal sidewalk tables among the downtown bustle. The owner claimed that she uses Illy beans for their espresso, but it is anything but. (Her blatant lying was all the more unnecessary since I asked after ordering.) There was no characteristic Illy aroma, and the flavor curiously tastes very much like Peerless - given that they clearly label Peerless on their drip coffee. Their espresso has a pale but even crema that coats the surface well. The overflowing cup is clearly overextracted, yet it's surprisingly not too bitter. Typical Peerless flavor of mild pepper/drip coffee.
