Review
Roman-style restaurant with a plain interior (looks like a former thrift shop with a paint job and some mirrors). Frequented by young locals in hipster spectacles discussing their East Bernal fixer-uppers. A single Italian waiter for a dozen copper-topped tables, so service can be slow. A small, single group La Spaziale, but they ask the right questions about your espresso (e.g., "Do you like short - the Italian way?"). While the beans aren't freshly ground, the waiter does a lot of pre-heating and other machine prep work. Thin crema, but decent body and flavor pulled short a la "ristretto". Some spice/pepper to the flavor. Waiter will even comp you with great homemade biscotti. [CLOSED: Sep 2005; replaced by Cafe Chez Maman.]
