|This caf is a mirror image of the other street-named neighborhood roastery cafs in SF (Chestnut St., Howard St.). They're remainders of their 1990s heyday but still operate under separate owners. Like its sisters, there's a mismatch of caf tables and chairs, old painted walls, storage of darkly roasted coffee beans in old wall bins exposed to the elements for maximum oxidation and staleness, and chalkboard menus advertising sandwiches, salads, and other edibles. They offer "Dark Roast" coffees for retail sale - including a Colombian Dark, Kenyan, Costa Rican, Kona, and other cultivars whose flavors are easily lost under heavy roasting treatment. Using an old four-group La Marzocco Linea, they pull shots with a pale, thin crema served tall in an Illy-logo Walkre cappuccino cup with no saucer. Surprisingly, it's not watery for its pour size. But the espresso has a plain flavor of pepper and some spice and serves better as filter drip coffee.
