|Not to be confused with "Paissan's Cafe" (note the possessive) on Kearny in North Beach, this caf suggests Italian roots of an earlier neighborhood era (even the word "Esspresso" [sic] misspelled on the awning) that has long since been replaced by the Mission's Latin American flavor. Nearly all the clientele here are Spanish-speaking, down to the "Licuados" (Smoothies) listed on their colored chalk blackboard caf menu. The staff here are mighty friendly, however - even if you have to be careful to touch anything here for fear of literally sticking to it. There's seating along the side and in the back of this long, narrow space among beat-up tables and chairs. Using Capricorn Coffee's Espresso Nova blend, they pull shots from an old two-group La San Marco, producing large shots with a bare layer of darker brown crema. Flavorwise, it is potent and a bit harsh: a slightly ashy, somewhat bitter tobacco taste.
