Just west of the San Francisco Centre mall, at the end of Mint Plaza, this is the newest café in a small area chain of Latino-owned coffeeshops. It opened in 2009 on the former site of Cafe 36. There are over a dozen small indoor tables in its sleek, modern, spacious interior - but nothing outdoors. They display bags of Caffè Umbria beans and Deruta ceramics. Using a single two-group La Spaziale Super 3000 machine, they pull sizeable, but not diluted, espresso shots with a healthy layer of darker brown crema of modest thickness and a good texture. Like their other locations, their espresso has a pungent flavor with a tangy edge, hints of pine, and pipe tobacco. Their milk-frothing is, expectedly, quite decent: consistent and a good consistency. But they oversize the volume of milk in their espresso drinks, so you have to take it down a notch (i.e., a macchiato is closer to a cappuccino). Served in old school ACF cups - and Rego porcelain for cappuccinos. (And Caffè Umbria-branded IPA cups for doppios.) [CLOSED: Papered up as of Sep '09 to be replaced by Mo'z Cafe.]
