|Hungry Joe's diner closed here in 2006 and was spruced up a little as the first installment of Toast Eatery. While the interior got a little modernization, the interior tables are stacked up against each other leaving little room to get through without faceplanting an unsuspecting diner into their waffles. SFers fawn for anything resembling breakfast, and its no exception here - on weekends there are waits all over the front sidewalk. There's also sidewalk dining, though not as much along Day St. in Hungry Joe's heyday. There's also the classic diner counter with stationary stools to complete what is essentially a diner. Using a rather unnoteworthy two-group La Spaziale Super 3000 behind the diner counter, they pull shots of Mr. Espresso with a healthy-looking medium brown crema - even and with a little swirl of texture. It's not a thin crema, and the short shot makes it look much better than it tastes, unfortunately. There isn't much aroma nor flavor to the cup: some herbal notes, some smoke, a touch metallic, and mostly flat - though not stale per se. There's also a little ashiness towards the bottom of the cup.
