|The local Santa Barbara County press might fawn a little over this place, but that's because standards around the Santa Ynez Valley are so poor. It's a quaint shop, with an outdoor deck in front under parasols at the parking lot opening of the Nielsen's Center strip mall. The mall, and the town, itself is a bit heavy on the retired cowboy set, which influences the coffee style and quality here. Walk inside, and you'll hear country music, see photos from local rodeos on the walls, and a mess of simple wooden tables. And yet they offer free WiFi. They offer a number of sandwiches and other edibles, but "S.Y.V. Coffee Co." primarily considers itself a coffeeshop. Using a two-group Astoria machine behind the service counter, they pull extra-large shots with only the faintest evidence of a vanishing medium brown crema. Despite the pour size, it's not an ashy and over-extracted cup. It tastes like a robust filter drip coffee, but then we ordered espresso and not filter drip coffee. A flavor of pleasant spice and some pungency.
