|Like it's sister caf downstairs in the Post St. Plaza, this above ground kiosk caters to Montgomery St. BART/Muni commuters - but also the bike messengers hanging out along the nearby metal fence enclosing the plaza. No seating: "to go" orders only. They used to use a typical superautomatic Franke machine, but they more recently switched to a three-group La Marzocco Linea, and it's defined a new standard for on-the-go espresso downtown. With the arrival of this machine, and the staff that run it, combined with the separate hours from downstairs, we broke this off into a separate review in Feb 2008. There four stand-up table areas. With the Linea, they pull modestly sized espresso shots with a rich, even, textured, medium-to-dark brown layer of crema. Flavorwise, it is both pungent and smoky but not overbearing: milder cloves and tobacco with some creaminess. Served in a small paper cup (with Intelligentsia branding).
