|Next to a Safeway, this is the site of the former Prudies Espresso Bar - converted when owner Tom Mock joined forces with supplier Sal Bonavita. It's a great outdoor space, with several wooden tables under canvas parasols, wide sliding glass doors that open up the entire corner café, and a few tables inside - plus a wall of coffee accessories. They focus on selling espresso, gelato, and pastries, and the site is very popular with locals. This despite a pizza place and a smoothie shop that adverise competitive espresso drinks right next door. Despite all of this, their espresso is weak and substandard. Using a two-group La Spaziale, they pull espresso shots with a thin, very pale crema. The shot is filled to the rim of the classic brown ACF cup. It has a watery body and a harsher flavor: an ashy, bitter edge laid over blander cedar and spice flavors. Sometimes places are popular more for convenience than quality, and this location appears to be one of those.
