Blue Bottle Coffee Co.
|James Freeman established a Bay Area Mecca for fresh-roasted coffee. Since then it has been infused with multiple rounds of venture capital (including Google Ventures, oddly) and has expanded to locations in New York City. By 2014 it purchased L.A.'s Handsome Roasters and announced expansion plans in Japan.
Meanwhile, as its subscription coffee business blossomed, it also acquired Tonx Coffee in 2014. It then added ("merged with") Tartine Bakery and by 2015 took an additional $70 million of investment lead by Fidelity. Meanwhile, it expanded its locations to include Tokyo, Japan.
