Nespresso is to good coffee what Tang is to good orange juice: a shelf-stable convenience that exacts a punishing price on quality.
Nestlé Nespresso pre-grinds their roasted coffee at remote locations, packs them into environmentally wasteful pods, and ships them the world over. The resulting beans may be in sealed capsules, but the coffee oils have already been churned up through pre-grinding -- oxidizing for weeks by they time they arrive at store shelves and for "club" mailing list orders. The resulting shots are consistently thin, bland, and have a sickly pale crema. They come in 12 "premium blends", including "ristretto" -- which is a bit like calling a vodka martini a "flavor" rather than a drink. Arguably quality coffee's biggest setback of the past decade. |
