Review
This café opened early in the winter of 2006, heavy on the dog theme for a dog crazy town (there's even a jar of doggy treats at the door). Dogs aren't allowed in, but many are parked out front like horses at the old western saloon. For a generally gritty section of Mission St. (though what isn't), locals are treated to a rather clean and new coffee house. Inside behind security gates are a few new, nicely surfaced indoor tables and a comfortable sofa with end tables and cushioned chairs - like it was your own living room. Typical local photography on the walls, ceiling fans, and an assortment of bagels, breakfast turnovers, and quiches. Using a smaller two-group La Cimbali, they produce an espresso with a thinner medium brown crema - filled moderately high (about a 2-oz pour) in the cup. It has an unfortunate ashy flavor that's too bitter to salvage its sharper tobacco notes. However, for some reason I actually appreciate the bitterness it achieves - as it does so without being a classically overextracted, watery cup. [CLOSED: As of Dec. 2012; replaced by Café St. Jorge.]
