Review
This former Java City Bakery & Cafe in the Embarcadero Center switched to a Posh Bagel in 2007, and the coffee has suffered since (not to mention they have some of the area's worst bagels). Ignore the Moloka'i MuleSkinner coffee sacks on walls - though they do still serve Java City here. When asking the "barista" about the origins of their beans, we noted their Mr. Espresso-supplied grinder, to which they errantly said, "Yes, we use Mr. Espresso beans." (We hate it when the staff makes stuff up when we ask them.) Among a few fast food tables inside and out, you can enjoy a forgettable espresso made from their three-group Faema E91 Diplomat. They serve it with a patchy layer of medium to light brown crema over an extra-large pour in a large Solo paper cup. It has a watery flavor with an edge of tobacco, some ash, and some pepper. It's not altogether terrible for strong drip coffee, but we question whether you can really call it "espresso".
