As we continued our quest to find redemptive coffee in the Santa Ynez Valley, this location has earned a lot of local press and accolades. Only a few miles down from the atrocities that happened at Michael Jackson's former Neverland Ranch, this Los Olivos coffeehouse is just a block off the main road in this old Western town that's been dressed up nicely for wine tourists. The coffeehouse wallows in its Westernness - from the old wooden floors, to the odd-shaped tables, to the wooden corner building lined by a wooden deck, to an old wooden water tower. They also offer smoothies, McConnell's ice cream, and free WiFi. Using a two-group Conti machine, they pull quite tall shots of Peet's coffee with a scant medium brown crema consisting of large bubbles. The serving temperature is also too high, scalding the tongue a little and imparting an ashy edge to a flavor that's otherwise tobacco and some spice. Served in decorative espresso cups and grossly overpriced. This would easily be among the bottom quartile of espresso shots served in SF - but here, in the SY Valley, it is almost held as a standard.
