Review
Paulo Kautz & Sylvia Medina are the chef/owners of this fine dining café in Carmel Valley Village. The emphasis is on country rustic cooking and is done quite well. The place packs in customers both inside and out on the padio. They are foodies here, and they attempt to carry it over to the coffee. However, their credibility is harmed the moment you see "La Vazza" (sic) coffee proudly displayed on their menus. Their beans are from preground Lavazza packages and are spooned into the portafilters of the ubiquitous (in the Monterey peninsula) two-group La Pavoni machine. No grinding here, folks, and neither do they preheat the Lavazza-branded Tognana cups. They serve espresso with a medium brown, mottled crema with real "legs" or staying power - as many times the espresso crema dissipates quickly at restaurnats. However, the cup is served quite full and therefore tastes a bit watery, with a mild pungent flavor that's accentuated by a medicinal tinge. Served with a small biscotti and white and brown organic sugar cubes on the side.
