A take-out chicken house in a seedier part of downtown has a window counter along Market St. and 'proudly serves' Java City coffees. Using a three-group Mr. Espresso La Pavoni, they pull a medium-sized shot in a short paper cup. It has a medium brown crema of surprisingly decent thickness, though it dissipates quickly. With a grittier flavor of smoke and thyme. One of the better non-Starbucks options in this dicey espresso area - though Blue Bottle is just a few blocks down.
